Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get confused. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems difficult at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough.
